Lou Lauwerys is an English printmaker whose handmade linocuts celebrate tropical plants and wildlife. Her subjects include traveller’s palms, frangipani and hornbills, bringing the distinctive shapes of tropical flora and fauna into carefully composed prints. Linocut is a relief-printing technique in which an image is carved into a surface before ink is applied and transferred to paper.
The process lends itself to strong outlines, considered shapes and the interplay of positive and negative space. In Lou’s botanical work, these qualities help give natural subjects a clear, graphic presence while preserving their recognisable forms.
