Ajay De’s expressive charcoal drawings capture everyday figures through dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Trained at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata and Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, he developed a practice influenced by Japanese monochrome painting and calligraphy. His subjects include Kolkata’s rickshaw pullers, whose presence and working lives become the focus of closely observed compositions.
